About In-N-Out Burger

In-N-Out Burger is a private company headquartered in Irvine, California. Lynsi Snyder, the granddaughter of the founders, owns it through a trust. The company does not franchise and has never gone public. Every restaurant sells the same three burgers, fries, three shake flavors and a list of fountain drinks.

According to the company, the beef patties contain no additives, fillers or preservatives, and the fries are cut by hand from fresh potatoes and fried in sunflower oil. In-N-Out Burger also prints Bible verses in small type on its cups and wrappers, a practice that dates to the 1980s.

History of In-N-Out Burger

Harry and Esther Snyder opened the first In-N-Out Burger on October 22, 1948, in Baldwin Park, California. It was the first drive-thru hamburger stand in the state, where customers ordered through a two-way speaker. A second location opened in Covina in 1951. Harry Snyder died in 1976 with 18 restaurants open, and his son Rich became president at age 24.

Growth picked up in the following decades. The 50th restaurant opened in Thousand Palms in 1988, and the first location outside Southern California followed in Las Vegas in 1992. Guy Snyder took over as president after Rich died in 1993, and the 100th restaurant opened in Gilroy in 1994. The 200th opened in Temecula in 2005 and the 300th in Anaheim in January 2015.

Expansion since then has moved east. Arizona arrived in 2000 and Utah around 2008. In 2011 the first Texas restaurants opened in Frisco and Allen. Oregon followed in 2015 and Colorado in 2020. Idaho opened in December 2023, Washington in August 2025 and Tennessee in December 2025. Albuquerque, New Mexico, is next on the list, with openings planned by 2027.

In-N-Out Burger Menu

The In-N-Out Burger menu has three burgers, french fries, shakes and drinks. Each burger comes with lettuce, tomato, spread and onions on a toasted bun. The spread is a house sauce the company says it has not changed since 1948.
